The Western Cape Government's new 8,000m² office and training facility on the Karl Bremer Hospital campus in Bellville achieved a 5-Star Green Star rating.
Consolidating offices onto a hospital campus
The Green Building consolidates administrative offices, conferencing, training and research facilities for the Western Cape Department of Transport & Public Works into a single new 8,000m² building on the Karl Bremer Hospital campus in Bellville, established in 1956. Sited on the campus's southern edge along Frans Conradie Drive, away from the hospital's main entrance, the building was positioned to preserve operational independence from the hospital while still allowing for future expansion.
The design pairs a taller southern wing, scaled to the busy road it fronts, with a lower northern wing that creates a pedestrian-scaled entrance and lets daylight reach into the taller mass, with a central atrium between the two. The completed building achieved a 5-Star Green Star rating, reflecting the Western Cape Government's mandate to deliver infrastructure that supports environmental and socio-economic sustainability.
Spoormaker's role
