MDS Architecture added a 12,000m² open-air piazza and lifestyle extension to Eastgate, giving the 30-year-old Bedfordview mall its first taste of outdoor dining and retail.
Eastgate's first outdoor wing
For the first time in its 30-year history, Eastgate Shopping Centre gained an outdoor lifestyle extension, adding an open-air piazza surrounded by restaurants, a new food court and additional retail and parking. Designed by MDS Architecture for owner Liberty Property Group and built by Grinaker-LTA, the extension increased the centre's gross lettable area by 12,000m², built around what partner Sean Pearce described as a contemporary, experiential design brief.
The piazza's earthy stone and timber finishes and triple-storey glass atrium are deliberately in contrast to the older mall structure, and include a mosaic river artwork by Clive van den Berg meandering through the space, alongside Fever trees, timber louvres and slatted pergolas.
Spoormaker's role
Spoormaker & Partners was part of the mechanical engineering joint venture (with Dientsenere TSA Maego) on the project, alongside RPP Consulting Engineers on wet services.
