This district hospital near Bridge City Mall was built to relieve pressure on the Mahatma Gandhi and Addington hospitals, serving Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu with a 500-bed, 10-block facility.
Relieving pressure on Durban's hospitals
Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital, named for the ANC founding member, was built near Bridge City Mall in KwaZulu-Natal to meet growing healthcare demand in Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu and ease pressure on the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Phoenix and Addington Hospital in South Beach. The 500-bed district hospital is organised into ten blocks either side of a central thoroughfare known as Hospital Street, offering inpatient and outpatient care, emergency medicine, surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics and other specialist services.
The hospital's HVAC installation includes nine megawatts of cooling power, a resolute air handling unit, centrifugal water-cooled chillers and closed-circuit cooling towers, alongside a dedicated infectious disease ward with pressure-cascading isolation rooms and roughly 3km of building services piping. All eight operating theatres are fitted with cameras linked to a lecture theatre for live teaching and training.
Spoormaker's role
Spoormaker & Partners was the mechanical engineer on the project, which received a SAPOA Other Development Award.
